The restoration of the Volna-K radio receiver was a challenging project, as it required a combination of electronics expertise and skills in spray painting, as well as the complex task of recreating the original letters. Despite progress made, as of January 28, 2023, the project is still ongoing. Specific tasks remaining include calibrating the radio bands and fabricating a plexiglass cover for the frequency scale.
Upon a closer examination and cleaning of the dust from the inside, it appeared that the receiver was functional, though the frequency scale was severely out of calibration. Despite this setback, the overall condition was manageable, and the receiver was able to be worked on.
As the first step of the restoration effort, I undertook the hardest part - repainting the front panel. After a little work with some sandpaper to buff out the rough parts I cleaned it off and gave it a coat of RAL6003 satin mat paint.
After repainting the receiver, I spent several days devising a solution to recreate the original text. I ultimately settled on using wood putty and a card to press it into the grooves, a method that proved to be highly effective and efficient.
A close up of the work:
To further enhance the authenticity and aged appearance of the letters, I applied a light buffing with an oily rag, which imparted a subtle yellowing effect to the letters.
And as you've seen on the thumbnail, the finished front panel:
As of today, that's it, expect an update soon :)
Success!
